Everything I write in this article is based on an experience I had. That experience was going to university, and it is one that changed my life forever in many positive ways. Like many people, I went to university with two sole intentions. The first was to learn about my given subject (in my case this way software engineering) and the second was to have my own space, my own room and the chance to do whatever I wanted, when I wanted (I had previously shared a room with my little brother my whole life, so I felt that I’d never really had any space to myself).
While you will undoubtedly learn a whole bunch of information about your chosen course (although this does depend heavily on how many lectures you go to!) you will find that the best lessons are not learnt in the classroom. When I first when to university I was a shy underachieving introvert with low self esteem. After I finished I was a much more outgoing individual with a far greater opinion of himself and a feeling that the world was at my feet and that it was just waiting to be conquered.
The main reason for this is because university forces you to get outside of your comfort zone and to do things that you wouldn’t normally and try things you never normally would. It also forces you to become independent since you’ll be looking after yourself 99% of the time.
