Indoor Activities for Kids With a Hula Hoop

As the weather gets warmer and spring starts producing the growth and bloom of flowers, plants, and all the other things that come with spring we look outside for activities for our students. One thing we may not plan for though is rain. Like the old saying goes “April showers bring may flowers.” So, what do you do when all of the games you have been planning for week can only be done outdoors?

These are all the questions you will be asking yourself when all of your kids are ready to go outside and you see rain. Where did it come from… the forecaster said it was going to be sunny all day. Below are some great indoor game ideas.

Games can be as simple or as complicated as you make them, but the overall goal is to create something fun, that keeps attention of your class, and promotes team work. One game you could do is a hula hoop contest. All you would need is two standard hula hoops and some fast paced kid friendly music. Then you need to choose two students and give them each a hula hoop. Let them know that once the music starts the contest begins and when they hear it stop to stop. Some kids are really awesome at hula hooping (even better than some adults) and they could do it all day.

Another idea for this game would be to let the kids be creative and show off all sorts of hula hooping skills. For example they might begin to spin the hoop around their arm, neck, let, or use the hula hoop as a jump rope. Whatever the case this game allows your students to be free to stretch their creative skills. Once the competition is complete you can then get the students who are watching and cheering to vote on which skill they liked the best. This way the contestants are involved, as well as, the audience. You can go back and forth putting your hand over each kids head and getting a response from the crowd. Whichever student gets the loudest screams from the crowd wins. The student who wins gets a prize, but the other contestant should get a prize also. This just helps to show that they are awarded for winning, but also for trying their hardest even if they did get in second.

This game can work for multiple students in your group. Do a few rounds of just who can do the hula hoop the longest as well as who can be the most creative with their hula hooping skills. This game could last for 30 min to an hour depending on how many students are playing and how creative the students can get.
