New Teachers

How to Create Rules and Procedures That Won’t Stress You Out!

All too often, new teachers tend to think that reporting discipline problems will ultimately solve the problem.

New teachers worry about how to create rules and procedures that will cause students to listen more. This fear can also be a new teacher’s biggest nightmare. Will students stand in line on the way to art class? Will students come to class – on time? Will the biggest troublemaker not cause havoc for the entire class? Will I be able to teach a lesson without students disrupting each other?

New teachers forget their relationship with students in the classroom and focus on speeding up the curriculum instead.

Why didn’t I spend more time reviewing certain procedures? Why didn’t I find out which procedures worked and which didn’t? Why didn’t I take the take to set-up an effective classroom that suits my style of teaching and beliefs? Things were so much better when I was student teaching!

Actually, creating an effective classroom that suits both your professional personality while building a relationship with your students is very stressful for any new teacher. It takes conscious effort and constant reflection to custom design goals and procedures that suit your classroom and complement your personality.

So just for this week, try creating rules and procedures that won’t stress you out. See what a difference it makes.

Begin by focusing on building a classroom management plan that is really reflective of yourself and who you are. Let go of any misconceptions and previous advice from other teachers/teacher trainers about HOW you should teach and enforce your rules and procedures. Whenever you notice a voice telling you what to do, immediately stop it. Release all thoughts about the past.

There might be some good advice about developing an effective classroom management plan, but let go of that for now.

Whatever you do today, use your own voice and intuition.

DECIDE to work with everything that comes your way.

Remember, no matter how bad a teacher you think you are, or however uncooperative you think your class is, you won’t be the same teacher with these students forever. And this too shall pass.

Remind yourself of that today and be thankful for opportunity to grow and learn.

Teachers make endless number of decisions daily.

Once you start to accept and work with the person inside yourself, the teacher, eventually you’ll find yourself setting rules and procedures that won’t stress you out and won’t fall apart!
