Accounting

Accounting For Your Future

One of the hottest trends in education today is, believe it or not, accounting. Remember when accounting was thought to be boring? Well, thanks to events like Enron, accounting has been given a fresh “spreadsheet”. But there are several things you need to keep in mind when considering your options.

First you must decide which style of learning is best for you. Classroom instruction versus On-line courses. With classroom instruction you have a more rigid structure and the pace at which you advance is pretty much set by college standards. Whereas with on-line courses you have greater control of how fast you progress, plus this can be much more convenient for your already hectic schedule. On-line courses are also more affordable.

Once you have decided which style of learning is right for you, make sure it meets the requirements for CPA Licensure in your state. You’ll need to know your state’s exact license regulations in order to get the right training. And don’t forget you will need to keep your license current and in good standing so continued education must also be prepared for. With so many options available, you should never settle for a program you are not comfortable with–this is your career and future so “second best” should not be an option.

Once you have obtained (earned) your CPA license, there are a few things you can do to keep sharp and on top of your game. Review old course materials to refresh yourself on things you may have forgotten. Stay up-to-date on the latest topics by visiting your local library or bookstore. And don’t forget accounting websites and blogs for current trends. Trade journals and finance newspapers are excellent sources of information to keep your knowledge up-to-date and relevant. Give “off-line” networking a try–attend association meetings and conferences, volunteer for projects, anything to keep you involved, motivated and sharp.
